How to play Video Poker
Written by casinoimpact.com
Online gambling has become very big over the past few years. It used to be that there were only a handful of internet casinos out there, and half of them were scams or close to it. Today, there are hundreds, probably thousands of legitimate online casinos out there on the web. Each casino has a different selection of games, and therefore, a different set of rules. Online poker rules are fairly straightforward, thankfully. Most poker you will find online is some variation of video poker, which is usually based off of 5-card draw. Most people know how to play 5 card draw, but in case you don't, I'll explain. First of all, you should know that video poker is much different than normal poker. In fact, it's more like a slot machine than an actual poker game. Bluffing has absolutely nothing to do with video poker, and you don't have to "win" a hand in order to win money. With video poker, all you have to do to get a payout is to get a winning hand. Winning hands vary from game to game, but usually start at a pair of jacks, and go up from there, though there are some games that you can win with a pair of tens.
How Video Poker works
The game works pretty simply. You select your bet, and are given your cards. From there, you can discard one or more of your cards, up to 3, or 4 if you have an ace. This is identical to normal 5 card draw so far. The cards you discard will be replaced with new cards. Then, if you have a winning hand, you will be paid. The amount you're paid is based on the pay tables for that video poker variation. With video poker, there are no second round of bets, no beating the house or other players, and no bluffing. This is why I said that video poker is more like slots than anything else.
The only online poker rules that you need to worry about when playing video poker are the pay tables and minimum winning hands. The minimum winning hands will always be listed in the game description or at least somewhere pretty obvious. However, the pay tables are rarely listed by the casinos. If you're curious how the machines pay out, you can do some quick research on the variant of the game. You can also find information concerning the payout percentage, which basically means what percentage of the bets the machine gives back as winnings.
This amount is usually between 97% and 100%. The house always has the edge with video poker, except with a few rare games where optimum playing strategies could potentially lead to a 100%+ return, though that is only if you played each hand perfectly. Video poker is a fun game, but since there are so many variations of it it's important to research the rules and minimum payouts before you start to play too much.
If you want to keep it simple, stick to Jacks or Better variations – they are the most popular and most commonly found video poker games.
