Video Poker Variants
Written by casinoimpact.com
Video poker is one of the most popular games on online casinos, and it's also pretty popular in real casinos too. Like most online casino games, video poker has quite a few different variants. The basic concept is the same for most games, but there are subtle differences. Also, since video poker is luck-based, choosing the best video poker game has a lot to do with the payout percentage or expected return. Video poker has fixed payout percentages, which means that the casino or house will always be up overall. They usually take 0.2-1% of the total bets, and obviously the less they take the more likely you'll be able to win consistently. All common versions of video poker are based on 5-card draw, but you should do some research and find the best video poker variant for you. There are two basic types of video poker – full pay and low pay. Full pay video poker variations offer the best overall payout percentages, but only when you bet the maximum amount for that machine. Low pay games have modified pay schedules, and usually are tweaked to produce more revenue for the casino and less for the player. Obviously this makes full pay video poker variations more attractive to players, both novice and expert. Now I'll go over some of the details of the more popular video poker variants.
Jacks Or Better
Jacks or Better is the most common video poker variant. It’s also called "draw poker" sometimes. The minimum winning hand in this game is a pair of jacks, hence the name. You can find Jacks or Better in pretty much every casino, online or off. There are also a few variants of Jacks or Better, the most popular of which is All American. All American is very similar to Jacks or Better, and it has pretty much the same pay table. The only difference is that All American has higher payouts for straights, flushes, and straight flushes. The disadvantage of All American is that it has lower payouts for full houses and 2 pairs, so the overall payout percentage for All American and Jacks or Better is about the same.
Tens Or Better
Tens or Better is another common video poker game. As the name suggests, it's pretty much the same as Jacks or Better, except for that a pair of 10's is the lowest winning hand. Strategies for this game are almost identical to Jacks or Better strategies, despite the fact that the payouts for full houses and flushes are very different. Bonus Poker is sometimes hard to find, but if you can find a full pay version of it, it's definitely worth playing. Bonus Poker is similar to Jacks or Better, except it has much higher payouts for four of a kind. The return percentage for Bonus Poker is 99.2%, one of the highest in the industry. Double Double Bonus is an even rarer game, which offers great payouts for 4 of a kind. Played with the perfect strategy, Double Double Bonus could potentially return 100.1%.
